Huntley 2009 Service to Youth Awardee
The Youth Service Bureau (YSB)
recently recognized Mike Huntley with its Service to Youth Award. Huntley, as the YSB Clinical Director,
has made a difference in the well being of youth throughout the area.
Huntley joined the YSB staff in
August 1989 as a family therapist at the Stillwater service center. He built a solid practice in youth
focused family counseling and as a speaker on parenting and youth issues. Today, he continues to devote a
significant portion of his time to counseling clients.
During his more than twenty years
of working with young people, Huntley has become well known for his effective
work with teen depression and suicide prevention. He continues to work with local and countywide efforts to
spread the word that youth depression is real and it is treatable, when parents
and youth are working together with a qualified and knowledgeable counselor.
In addition to his direct work with
youth, Huntley supervises three YSB therapists and two Chemical Health
Prevention Specialists. He also
participates in countywide mental health and substance abuse collaborations on
behalf of youth and families.
At the YSB, Huntley is the go to
person for technology issues. He
keeps the many machines and programs working, also finding a few minutes here
and there to tweak the systems.
Huntley was recognized during the
YSB’s recent staff planning retreat at LaLake in Woodbury. As the Service to Youth recipient for
2009, he joins a formidable list of local leaders who have contributed to the
well being of local youth and families.
Huntley and his family live in
Woodbury. He is active in scouting
where he is able to work with youth on a more informal basis.
